For long-term missionaries destined for Islamic countries, Hindu countries, Buddhist countries, or countries governed by Ancient Chinese philosophies such as Confucianism or Taoism, research is being conducted now to prepare appropriate text books for missionaries destined for PILGRIM. Evangelism Training

A survey by Pew Research shows that churches that do evangelism grow whereas churches that ignore evangelism gradually disappear. When did your church last provide evangelism training to your congregation? If your church or mission organization does not have resources or staff to train your congregation or your organization members, then let us know. COTARI will be happy to provide Practical Evangelism Training to suit your needs, either for a short-term mission group or for a church discipleship class.

Practical Guide for Evangelism

This course is designed as the last step of a church discipleship training. Each of the options below includes a separately scheduled evangelism practice session in the community. The presentation schedule and intensity may be adjusted to meet the needs of the church or mission group:

  1. Twelve weeks, with one 2-hour class per week (original design)
  2. Four weeks, with one 4-hour class per week (intermediate intensive)
  3. One week, with an 8-hour class on Saturday and a 4-hour class on Friday or Sunday (most intensive)

Session 1: Introduction The scope and purpose of the class is explained along with the intended students for this class. This class is not for beginner Christians, but intended as the final step of a discipleship class. It introduces a wide spectrum of evangelism methods utilized in the Bible and throughout church history. It also emphasizes that evangelism is a commission, not a gift. This is very common misconception. Christian population growth pattern is analyzed to emphasize the need for evangelism for every Christian. The purpose of the class is to produce disciples making disciples, the final step in the discipleship training.
Session 2: Old
Testament
A complete review of the Old Testament with regard to evangelism and mission is provided. It covers the Pentateuch which reveals the promise of blessing for all the families in the very beginning of history and also teaches that the words of God purify our cultures. It also covers how this is treated in the history of Israel.It then leads to the prophets which reveal Messianic prophecy. Messianic prophecy not only tells the coming of Jesus Christ, but also shows the extent of the evangelism, all nations on the earth.Finally it teaches the Spirit of evangelism and mission contained in the books of Jonah and Hosea.
Session 3: New
Testament
A complete review of the New Testament with regard to evangelism and mission is provided. The first part describes the main teachings of Jesus Christ, followed by the second part that contains the main teachings of Apostle Paul. The teachings of Jesus Christ and Apostle Paul are summarized and their applications are discussed.
Session 4: Factors That Prevent Evangelism All the major factors that prevent evangelism are described: fear, lethargy, lack of knowledge and training, and other misconceptions. For each of these factors, discussions are provided regarding the way to overcome these barriers to evangelism. Most Christians do not do evangelism due to these barriers and blame that that do not have the “gift” of evangelism.
Session 5: Andrew Evangelism It describes what is Andrew evangelism, how it is practiced, and who practices. It also discusses why and when Andrew evangelism is useful. This is the simplest evangelism method. The story of Operation Andrew by Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. The story of Dwight L. Moody. Saving a soul is important.
Session 6: Potato Evangelism It describes what is Potato evangelism that was developed by a South Korean deacon, who brought more than two thousand people to his church in less than two years, including such unlikely people as a fortune teller. It discusses how this method could be applied to various situations, including an encounter with a Muslim.
Session 7: Common Features of Traditional Evangelism Methods
and Four
Spiritual Laws
The traditional evangelism methods are discussed in this session, including Four Spiritual Laws, Evangelism Explosion, and other methods (Christ Witness Mission, Roman Road, John’s Way etc). Common features of these traditional evangelism methods are discussed including: diagnosis of the ones to be evangelized, acceptance prayer (need memorization), how to handle objections, how to screen coverts after they received Jesus Christ, etc. Also it discusses where these methods work well and where they do not work.It then presents Four Spiritual Laws that is required to be memorized by students.
Session 8: Evangelism Explosion
and Other Traditional Evangelism Methods
It presents the background history and the main elements of Evangelism Explosion. It is required to memorize basic laws of Evangelism Explosion. Then the closing presentation and aftercare of Evangelism Explosion are discussed.Similar discussions are provided for Christ Witness Mission, Roman Road, and John’s way.
Session 9: Practices of Various Evangelism Methods Make sure that students have enough practice time. It demonstrates the practice of various methods in the class. Practices can be continued in parallel with the class, or independently they may form a group so that they meet regularly to practice these evangelism methods and make these methods become a part of their life.
Session 10: Factors
That help Evangelism
It then discusses all the major factors that help evangelism: friendship, life’s difficulties, leading a sanctified living, and the role of the pastor in the church.This is to provide a deeper understanding for various evangelism methods, and prepare students for oikos evangelism. Also it is emphasized that no church growth is possible with no evangelism.
Session 11: Oikos Evangelism It provides why oikos evangelism was powerful during the early church, but does not work in the modern times. It develops the definition of new oikos and new oikos evangelism method, and discusses how one can apply oikos evangelism to close relatives and friends who have been resistant to the Gospel and the church.
Session 12: Personal Evangelism Plan It presents how to set up goals and plans for personal evangelism for each participating student. Everyone, including all pastors and missionaries should practice personal evangelism. Preaching or having a crusade does not remove the burden of personal evangelism as a way of fulfilling the Great Commission. Discussion on each other’s personal evangelism plan and goal in the class.
